Labour Leaflet Response - Thamesteel

It was not my intention to become involved in the cut and thrust of the KCC elections, however, I have just read the leaflet put out on Sheppey by the Labour Party, which accuses me of inaction over the closure of the steel works.

I know that people have become cynical about MPs, believe the worst of us and feel that we never tell the truth, so rather than use my own words to explain my efforts on behalf of the Island’s steelworkers I would like to quote verbatim from a letter I received almost exactly 12 months ago. It reads:

“Dear Gordon, I would like to say a very big thank you for all the support you have given the Thamesteel Community Union members in trying to continue steel making at Sheerness. Your exceptional speech at the 90 minutes debate (in Parliament) was outstanding.”

That letter was signed “In unity” by Pat Wiggins, the branch secretary of Community, who also happens to be the Labour KCC candidate for Sheppey in whose election address the criticism of me appeared!

I just wanted the people of Sheppey who received and read Pat’s election address to know the truth about the work I have been doing on their behalf.
