Scouts flying high with community bird boxes

Scouts from the 8th Sheppey Scout Group have been flying high putting up bird boxes in Sheerness in aid of Scout Week.

Local MP Gordon Henderson visited their scout hut in Broad Street in Sheerness on Saturday to speak to the group and their leader, Robert Fountain, and to take a look at the finished bird boxes.

The scouts delivered leaflets last week in the nearby community offering homeowners to buy a bird box and have it installed for £5 each. They received a total of 20 responses so far.

Scout Group Leader, Robert Fountain said,

“I have to thank Paul Dixon one of our scout leaders for the idea to build Bird Houses and Chris Berrill our quartermaster for helping the scouts construct them. It was really nice to meet Mr. Henderson and I know the scouts and volunteers enjoyed talking to him. I appreciate how busy he must be, so it was nice to see him come and give us his time and support. “

Mr Henderson said,

“I was very impressed with the craftsmanship of the bird boxes. The scouts had obviously worked very hard on them so they would look great within the community. I congratulate them for their efforts.

“I used to be in the Cubs as a young boy and so I am well aware of how important it was to learn life skills and volunteer to make a difference. Scout Week encourages that concept by asking the scouts to choose a new exciting activity to get involved in and I think this was an innovative idea.”
