MP says build more new homes for young people

Gordon Henderson MP today highlighted the difficulties of getting onto the housing ladder for young people, after disappointing new housing figures were published.

According to new figures published by NHBC, there were 92,313 new homes built in 2012, compared to 108,490 the previous year.

In Sittingbourne and Sheppey, there were 137 new homes built last year, compared to 232 in 2011.

“As these NHBC figures demostrate, we are not building enough homes to give young people a chance to get on the housing ladder.

“It is important that we see an increase in the number of new homes being built. We need to get many more young people in home ownership and to increase the supply of good quality, good value new homes.

‘However, housing developments must be in the right area and should not detract from the quality of life of existing residents. There is currently land available in previously agreed locations, including brown field sites. I very much hope that developers will now come forward to build on that land, rather than seeking planning permission to build on any new green field sites.

“In addition, I would urge young people to consider the Government’s new Mortgage Guarantee Scheme, which is designed to help first time buyers by offering a 20% loan deposit if they contribute 5%.”
