SCAP launches 2009 “Litter Angels” anti-litter initiative.
Following the success of the Litter Angels competition last year, Swale Community Action Project (SCAP) director, Gordon Henderson, has announced a different format for 2009.
Last year, local primary schools held a competition amongst their pupils to design an anti-litter poster, with the winners in two age groups at individual schools going forward to a Swale wide final.
This year there will be three categories and the competition will be extended to include all schools in Swale. The categories will be:-
1. Designing an anti litter poster.
2. Writing a short story to highlight the anti-social nature of dropping litter.
3. Using litter and other waste materials to make models.
Gordon launched this year’s campaign by presenting Conservative Party Leader David Cameron with framed copies of the 2008 winning posters, which were designed by Sophia Roscoe (5-9 age group) and Rebecca Pavitt (10-11 age group) both of whom came from Regis Manor School in Sittingbourne.
Gordon also announced that local artist Sioux Peto and businesswoman Pam Watts have agreed to join the SCAP team to help organise the Litter Angels competition.
Gordon Henderson said:
“I am delighted that Sioux and Pam have agreed to join the SCAP team and help organise this year’s Litter Angels competition. Their experience and enthusiasm will mean that this year we can widen the base of the competition by adding writing and model making categories and by inviting secondary schools to take part.
“There might be some who question whether we should be running a competition like this in the depths of a recession, but we believe the work of encouraging our local youngsters to help keep our local environment a litter free zone is an important part of their education, which is why we have decided to press ahead.”
A timetable for the Litter Angels competition will be announced in the spring; however, any school which is interested in taking part can email Gordon at tellgordon@tesco.net.
