MP calls on homeowners to take action to reduce their energy bills
Gordon Henderson, MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, is urging local residents to take advantage of FREE help to keep energy bills down this winter.
Mr Henderson, along with British Gas, is helping households with three simple steps to deliver savings of more than £300 a year.
The call comes as British Gas extends its offer of free loft and cavity wall insulation to include all British homeowners, regardless of who supplies their energy.
Mr Henderson’s three simple steps to lower energy bills:
1) Insulate your home:
British Gas is offering all homeowners free loft and cavity wall insulation, even if they’re not British Gas customers. The insulation can save up to £300 a year and is available until 30th November 2012.
2) Monitor your energy usage and move to the best deal:
A simple energy monitor, also available from British Gas, can help an average household cut its bills by £125 a year. British Gas is contacting all its customers once again to make sure they are on the right deal for them and receiving all of the discounts, rewards and benefits they are entitled to.
3) Switch to Duel Fuel Direct Debit and save:
Receiving both electricity and gas from the same supplier and paying by Direct Debit can mean savings of up to £67 per year.
The British Gas Home Insulation offer means that any homeowner with unfilled cavity walls and a loft with little or no insulation can apply to British Gas for free installation of the measures – worth more than £1,000. Loft insulation can save households up to £175 from their annual heating bills and cavity wall insulation can save a further £135 each year. According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), nearly half of Britain’s homes do not have adequate basic insulation. Only 57% of Britain’s lofts have been properly insulated and only 58% of cavity walls have been filled.
The new British Gas offer includes the following:
• Free insulation provided and installed by British Gas which would typically cost around £350 per measure
• Free scaffolding (if needed) worth up to £450
• Free air vents (if needed) worth £100
• Elderly customers or those on qualifying benefits are also eligible for up to £150 to help with the cost of loft clearance
Gordon Henderson said:
“We have a great community spirit here in Sittingbourne and Sheppey and I know that many people do their bit to help others. I would like to harness that neighbourliness and urge everybody to make sure that their friends and family are getting all the help they can in these difficult economic times. If you or someone you know might benefit from this offer, then do call British Gas on 0800 980 8177.”
Mr Henderson will be holding a number of events in the coming months, including a roundtable meeting at Swale Borough Council on 12th October 2012 for local charities and organisations who help people who find it hard to keep their homes warm in winter.
If a charity or organsation would like to attend the roundtable meeting, please contact 01795 423199 or email [email protected]
Mr Henderson will also be holding a special energy bills advice surgery, sponsored by British Gas, for constituents in January 2013 to discuss with them how they can save money on their bills. Further details will be released soon.
