MP urges businesses to claim rate relief

Gordon Henderson MP, Member of Parliament for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, is urging local businesses to check whether they are eligible for relief on their business rates.

In the Spring, the government announced a package of relief to help hard-pressed businesses facing higher bills following a revaluation of business rates this year. This included a £1,000 discount to pubs with a rateable value of less than £100,000, a cap for those losing Small Business Rate Relief and a discretionary fund to give help to businesses facing higher rates bills as a result of the revaluation.

Acknowledging Swale Borough Council’s progress in rebilling businesses that qualify for help, Gordon Henderson MP said, ‘I am keen that businesses get what they are due under the relief scheme put in place by government. If businesses receive their new bills and feel the rises are unfair or that they have not been given the additional rate relief they were expecting then they should contact the council as soon as possible.

‘Swale Council has been allocated a discretionary grant fund of £345,000 to assist businesses who are affected, so I urge business owners to contact the Council if they think they might be eligible for help.

‘Unfortunately, any unclaimed money will be returned to Central Government and I want to keep as much of it as we can here in Sittingbourne and Sheppey.’
