FOR SITTINGBOURNE & SHEPPEY

The Isle of Sheppey Community came together on Friday night to secure a future for Sheerness County Youth Club.

Ray Featherstone MBE, senior youth worker at Sheerness County Youth Club, and a number of the existing trustees of the Club were joined by local MP Gordon Henderson, Cllr Ken Pugh (KCC), Cllr Mark Ellen (SBC) and representatives from Sheppey matters, Sheerness Enhancement Association for Leisure and the Isle of Sheppey Academy.

The meeting, which was chaired by Mr Henderson, agreed that the existing trust board will be expanded to include representatives from the other groups represented at the meeting. The object of the revised trust will be to ensure that the first-rate youth provision at Sheerness County Youth Club is continued and where possible extended to cover the whole Island.

 Mr Henderson said:

“The meeting was very productive and I’m proud to see the community coming together to ensure that the Sheerness County Youth Club, a centre of excellence for youth provision in Kent, continues its outstanding work at the Club and in the wider community.”

The future of the Club was put into question when New House Youth Centre in Sittingbourne was allocated as the ‘hub’ for youth provision in Swale under Kent County Council’s restructuring of youth services in Kent.

Kent County Councillor for Sheerness, Ken Pugh, explained at the meeting that Sheppey has a unique Island community deserving of its own ‘hub’ and outreach worker. He said he would encourage Kent County Council to commission the trust to provide youth services across the Island.

Ray, who has worked with young people on Sheppey for over 50 years, is adamant that the community secure the future of the Sheerness County Youth Club at the end of the year. All involved are working together to ensure that this is the case and that all young people on Sheppey will soon benefit from the award-winning youth provision at Sheerness County Youth Club.
