MP welcomes £10,000 repair grant for local church

Local MP, Gordon Henderson has welcomed an announcement from the National Churches Trust that they have agreed to contribute £10,000 for repairs to St Mary the Virgin’s Church, Upchurch.

The National Church Trust is the only UK-wide independent charity dedicated to supporting church buildings of historic, architectural and community value. Grants are funded by English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Director of Policy, Matthew Seward said,

“We are glad to have been able to assist in this particular case, but as you may be aware, many churches are in critical need of repair with the potential bill across the country running into hundreds of millions of pounds. We do not rely on public money and much fundraising is undertaken by the individual churches themselves.”

Gordon Henderson added,

“I am sure that parishioners in Upchurch will be as delighted as I am that St Mary’s is going to receive this money to undertake much needed repairs on the church.”
