MP welcomes npower refunds for energy customers

Local MP, Gordon Henderson, welcomed the announcement by npower that it will make refunds to 1.8 million customers who overpaid for gas in 2007.

The announcement followed close work with Consumer Focus to ensure a fair amount is paid back to all those who are eligible for refunds.

In 2007, npower changed the way it applied its charges for the first block of higher-priced gas units which households pay, but this change was not communicated effectively, affecting an estimated 1.8 million customers.

For those customers entitled to payments, these will range from £1 up to about £100. The average payment will be around £35 before VAT and interest are added. The combined payments offered will consist of £63m for gas charges plus £3m in VAT and £4m in interest.

Gordon Henderson said:

“Energy prices are high enough as they are and people shouldn’t also be penalised by unfair overpayments as well.

“I commend Consumer Focus for working closely with npower to make sure refunds are fair and that no one loses out.

“Local npower customers will not need to do anything to claim this refund. npower will be writing to all affected customers over the next two months offering payments, which can be cashed at the Post Office.

“Customers who believe they may be entitled to compensation but have not been contacted by the end of November should contact npower.”
